Moving in 来日後の手続き
The procedures for your first 30 days in Tokyo, in order.
Your first 30 days, in order
- Before moving in — book your utilities. Gas needs an in-person appointment, so book it first. Water and electricity can be started online. → Electricity, gas and water
- Within 14 days — register your address at your ward office. Your residence card is updated at the same counter, in the same visit. → Resident registration · Residence card address
- At the same visit — if you are not insured through your employer, enroll in National Health Insurance (国民健康保険) at the same office. Aged 20–59 and not employed by a company? Ask about National Pension too — exemptions exist if your income is low.
- A few weeks later — your My Number arrives by mail. No application needed; just don’t lose the letter. → My Number
Electricity, gas and water 電気・ガス・水道
Start all three before or right after you move in. Water and electricity can be done online — gas needs an in-person appointment.
My Number マイナンバー
Your 12-digit tax and social security number. It is created automatically after you register your address — you just wait for a letter.
Residence card address 在留カード住所変更
Your residence card must show your current address — but there is no separate trip: it happens at the ward office when you register.
Resident registration 転入届・住民票
Register your new address at your ward office within 14 days of moving in. This creates your jūminhyō (resident record), which almost everything else depends on.
